General Information
School Hours
The morning bell rings at 7:50. School begins promptly at 8:00a.m. and ends at 3:00p.m. Students are expected to be in their seats and ready to begin at 8:00 a.m.
Attendance
A successful school experience is the responsibility of the children, the parent and the school. Your child's progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without tardiness is important.
Daily Take Home Folder
Every student has a “daily take home folder”. This folder keeps all of the important daily papers and homework for that night together and protected.
Planner
A daily planner be coming home each night. This is new for second grade students and parents. Monday through Thursday we will put our homework assignments in them. The homework should be completed for the next morning unless otherwise stated in the assignment book. If the circle labeled COMPLETE is colored in, then the assignment was completed in the classroom. Please check and sign the planner daily so your child will come to school prepared. If your child is not handing in homework I will send home a homework alert slip. This will let you know of the work they are missing. Graded papers will go home with students on Fridays. Please go through their work with them and correct mistakes. They do not have to hand these papers back in to me unless it has a “REDO” on the top of the paper.
Wednesday Folder
Every Wednesday a folder from the school will be sent home with the youngest child from each family. This will contain important school information. This folder should be looked at, signed and returned by Friday of the same week.
Discipline
I believe in having high expectations of the children to follow classroom rules and to help them understand the reasons behind rules. I want all of the children to have the opportunity to learn and for no student to keep another student from being able to learn. I strive to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment for the children in which we work and live as a team in our classroom. I also have a reward program for good behavior. In the past it has been a basic stop light system. Green is good to go. Yellow is slow down and think. Red is stop! If at the end of the week your child gets all green lights he or she will get to pick from the treasure box. A yellow light loses 5 minutes from recess, a red light loses the whole recess.
Our classroom rules include:
Our number one rule is Follow the Golden Rule!
Raise your hand to speak. No blurting.
Listen while others are talking
Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself
Always do your best work
Sacraments and Mass
We receive two sacraments in the second grade: 1st Reconciliation and 1st
Communion. We celebrate weekly mass and we also have opportunities to plan and present the weekly mass. Please refer to the mass dress code.
Gym
We will be attending gym on Tuesday afternoons. Please send your child to school wearing gym shoes and appropriate gym attire. Your child may keep a pair of shoes at school if you would like. Girls may not wear dresses to gym.
Birthdays
Birthdays are special times in second grade. Feel free to bring in special snacks or treats on or around your child’s birthday. Please remember the plates and forks if necessary. Please do not send party invitations to school unless everyone in the class is invited or all of the same sex (all the boys or all the girls). Feelings are easily hurt when everyone is not included.
Book Orders
About once a month I will be sending home book club order forms. There is no obligation to purchase any. I am ordering myself and feel you may want to also. Usually there are some good selections which are reasonably priced. When ordering, please make checks out to the individual book club or me, not to Bishop Baraga Catholic School!
When Your Child Is Sick
Please keep your child home from school if he/she is not feeling well. It is our policy that children with fever or signs of fever should be kept home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever or signs of fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications.
Spelling Test Procedure
We will have spelling tests every Friday. If your child is absent
on Friday he or she will not have to take the test. Their grade will not be
affected by missing the test for 2 times. If a student misses three or more spelling
tests in a marking period their grade will be a zero for each missed test until
the test is made up. Tests may be made up on Wednesdays at
3:15.
